What great lines, in terms of feel (with that powerful momentary pause adding emphasis), language, and the expressing of a confounding destruction. A burn despite a lack of oxygen. There's a feeling of tragic acceptance there, coincidencing with a near timeless history. Very powerful. All around strong feeling throughout this one, and one I imagine that more than a few of us can relate to, but that verse is on it's own level in terms of how well it's written and how much it hits the heart. Your use of the ballad form, and the quatrains traditionally associated with it, is very adroit, and the use of rhyme keeps the poem moving forward until the final line. Great poem!!!
