2) Profero Lux (By the Waters)

By the waters I feel winter's chill.

In my soul is an emptiness that seraphim cannot fill.

Sadness for my heart's desire:

Death... in the bloody mire.

Pray, protector, my soul safe will you keep?

For shadows fall and demons call from the deep.

Though they call, answer them not.

If you go, then only ill will have been begot.

Have, now, the strength of summer's day,

Fighting all evil clouds of black and gray.

I see your misfortune and mischance;

Remember, there is a time to mourn and a time to dance.

How can the call be refused?

Is it dark thoughts that are pondered and mused?

From whence do Men get strength to fight?

Wrought of God and His immortal Might?

Oh, my love, oh for you would I die.

By the gulf of separation, alone and cold, here I lie.

Where is the love? The love that cannot be broken

Of which ancient kings and prophets have spoken?

I will show you the love that never ends:

For no greater love than one should die for his friends.

If death should take me, then unto death will I depart

If it would let you live. Live, desire of my heart.

Still, the call rings loud and clear,

Making the hearer blinded by doubt and fear.

Let the angels sing not only praise and joy

But also of songs reminding Men of evil that demons employ.

Fooled can be the hearer of the bitter rhyme of lies;

So, God, save us from evil from which the innocent dies.

A song is in my heart for you,

One that tells of my love, undying, forever true.

I will sing and put strength in your heart.

Comfort your soul, so that darkness will depart.

By the waters, I will send out the light.

Evermore shining in the darkest dark of night.

Amazing love, grace and assurance found,

For by our song will our hearts be bound.

Death be forever defeated and worship forever manifested;

For strength and endurance and love have been tested.

So, my desire, the hope do not give up,

For love will pour from heaven and overflow our cup.

Mercy and peace will forever be ours

If you would be ignore the evil call of the hours.

My beloved, still by the waters I wait;

Sadness, from my eyes, never escape.

I will show you the light and you must perceive;

Only you can make the choice for to it receive.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Profero Lux is Latin for "Bring forth the light." This poem has two interpretations. It can be read as a dialoge between a human sinner (odd verses) and Jesus (even verses). The second translation is an intimate song of the speaker to his beloved who must chose between eternal life with God (and the speaker) and eternal life in Hell. Death in this interpretation is not always a physical death, but hell (the Bible calls it the Second Death). The light the speaker shows to his beloved is Jesus (who said "I am the light unto the world"). This my favorite of my works, because it reflects my sadness for someone I love very much but who has yet to fully embrace Jesus. It is to this person this poem is dedicated

Most excellent. You write very well. Interestingly enough, the setup of this poem is suspiciously familiar....

By the way--any more poems dedicated to this person and they might become spoiled...

This is a truly heartfelt prayer in poetic form. Enough said. I am impressed with not only the transparency of your writing, but also the style in which this one was written (brings Shakespear's writings to mind).

In Christ,
