ONE MORE DAY

If you were told this was going to be your last day that tomorrow you’ll be leaving everything behind…I wonder, after hearing that, what thoughts pop into your mind?

Is there one person…maybe more…someone you have known…to whom you might want to write a letter or talk to on the phone

Is there a person whom you’ve been missing…who you want once more to see?

Do you want to say ‘I love you’ one final time to your friends and family?

Would you watch the sunrise one more time…or count the stars up in the sky”

Is there a place you’d like to visit once more before you die?

If this is your final day on Earth…the final moment your destiny will allow…then it stands to reason, if you think about it, your most important time…is now.

Since you can’t be sure if todays the day your life will slip into the past…it’s probably a good idea to live every day as if it is your last.

Which means each moment is an opportunity to be generous and kind…to do the things that only a moment ago…popped into your mind.

That way…even if you don’t die tomorrow…when you finally leave this place

you will leave with no regrets…and a smile on your face.

And just as important to your heart…your soul…your mind…

will be the smiles on the faces…of those you leave behind.

Please excuse me now…I have to go…you see I intended this poem to be for you…

but I just realized there are a number people I’d like to call

and a number of things I’d like to do.

ONE MORE DAY

The young couple was engaged to be married…and though they hadn’t set a date…their families came together to rejoice and to celebrate.

And celebrate they did with food and wine and song…toasts were made to the couple…that their life be happy, successful and long.

That their life be one of hopes and dreams fulfilled…of wonder and surprise…their mothers were so happy…tears fell from their eyes.

Their fathers were busy shaking hands and doing what fathers do…but…if you took the time to notice…their were tears in their eyes too.

As I watched the celebration…watched the festivities unfold that day…

If I was to give them some advice…this is what I’d say.

As you spend your life together…whatever happens…come what may…before you close your eyes each night…may you wish for one more day.

One more day to love…to laugh…to count the stars up in the sky…one more day to make mistakes…to apologize…to cry.

One more day to face the world united…to endure the fairest and foulest weather…one more day of life…one more day to be together.

It’s such a wonderful feeling when you open your eyes once the night is through…to look at one another and know another wish came true.

This would be advice…yes…this is what I’d say…

I’d wish you a wonderful life together…filled with a multitude of one more days.

For all we really have are moments together…moments when we laugh and love and play…

And the best any of us can hope for…is one more moment…one more day.

ONE MORE DAY

His prayer is simple and unchanging…

each night a silent grace…

“All I ask,” he pleads with folded hands…

”is one more day in her embrace.”
