I cannot cite the source (and will gladly cite it subsequently, if it can be verified); but Elmer Batters, the pioneer glamor/stockings photographer said, in his elder years, that when he was a lad, he thought the reinforced toes and heels were meant to indicate where, upon the foot, his ardent kisses should be placed.
