Stuart Staub
We giggled as we watched them turn
Slowly by the Christmas tree
Just a bunch of kids we were
Not quite sure what love could be
Neither he nor she spoke a word
They just smiled in each other's eyes
Shifting in a zephyr's waltz
Wrapped in love that could not die
When we asked our Mom in hushed tones
Just what it was we saw
She softly smiled and said to us
"She's dancing with Grandpa."
Years walked by and then one day
Grandpa had to leave us
Grandma softly held his hand
Spoke of love and life and trust
He couldn't speak or shed a tear
Or tell her of his love
But the light that glowed within his eyes
Spoke more than enough
Then he smilled at her
His last smile
And it was clear what we just saw
She was dancing with Grandpa
They didn't need to hear a note
They didn't need a chord
They didn't need to turn a turn
Or have their feet touch the floor
And then not so long ago
It was Grandma's turn to leave
Called back up to Heaven's gates
Scolding us not to grieve
She passed away one quiet night
Dying softly as she slept
And despite the promise we had made
Everyone one of us had wept
But something when I pray I see
And it's so clear what I saw
Her holding him and him holding her, yes
She's still dancing with Grandpa
You've just done the impossible: brought a tear to my eye. You bastard! Damn that was a good poem...I'll go read it again. Black hole between the lungs and all.
This one made me cry.
