#5- "Friendship"

I used to live in a world of black and white,

A little blind and hypnotized.

You lean a little to the left or the right,

But you can only see what's on your side.

So you conform with the best of intention,

Do nothing different, just fall in line.

It is, perhaps the most acute pain a person can know.

The nick of a sword upon a soldier's arm cannot compare,

To the anguish a prisoner feels at the crack of a whip.

Even if the whip does not strike the prisoner's body,

It surely cuts deeply at his soul.

We are all prisoners at one time or another in our lives,

Prisoners to the expectations of those around us.

I have known the crushing of the sould that defeat brings,

And the burning, sickening pain of deep wounds.

The pendulum swings both ways,

But it always swings down.

Don't judge me by my failures,

Only by my dreams.

We live in a world of dreams.

Her quest left her nothing short of a fanatic.

But she was not the only stone,

Skipped across this gravel road,

Leading down the path of lonliness.

My enemy was solitude.

The interminable, incessant silence.

How do you measure centuries when a single hour seems a day,

And a single day seems a year?

I could not begin to understand the truth of time,

Of how it's passage seemed to slow

When the moments were not shared with others.

I'm one of those things you'll save forever,

But never need.

I need your help to get up from my knees.

I can't seem to see the forest for the trees.

Until now she has ne'er really lived,

nor known the worth of the life she has used so carelessly

Blame my fears.

All these shadows came to rest in my head.

Theirs was the first society I came to know

that was based on the strengths of the community,

not on the paranoia of selfish individulism.

Joy multiples among friends,

But grief multiplies with every division.

A woman or man may come to hold many treasures in life,

Gold, gems, lovers, power, influence:

All are of value.

But of them all, the most valuable are friends,

Good and true.

Have these and you will scarce notice the lack

if ye never win aught else.

This is truly a great write. Not even, in terms of great amidst a day of reading, but one that could stand out against days to come. It's of our time, but many has it's own particular timelessness also. Something more people should read, i'm really impressed.
