Last night I watched “Love & Basketball”…
And recalled a love so lost
That we ignore it all…
A love that has fallen off, but
We think we know it all…
Let me take you back for a sec...
Remember the afternoon walks in the park;
Late night phone calls making plans for tomorrow…
Naw… y’all don’t remember that…
How she would fall asleep on the phone,
And when you hung up she called right back…
No two-ways or cellulars,
Just, “call me back in ten…”
And you counted every minute,
But see that was when love meant something then…
Man, how I remember…
The first month; second month; third month anniversary…
Dedicating love songs to each other over the radio station…
Couldn’t get off the phone without saying,
“I love you,” and “I love you too…”
Nicknames that defined the two of you…
He was your “sweetie” and you were his “boo…”
Yeah, those were the days…
When she would write love letters that would end with,
“Eternally,” or “forever yours, Mrs. …
Whatever your last name was…”
But I guess you’re too old to remember that kind of love…
The kind of love that caused you to write her name a hundred times in your folder…
Skipping class to walk her to hers,
But now that you’re older I guess those things aren’t important anymore…
But man, those were the days…
Just take yourself back for a sec…
Remember carving a heart with both your names inside on the desk?
And making love was simply public lip locking…
Walking down the halls with your hands in each other’s back pockets…
Back when it was important for a Virgo to hookup with a Sagittarius,
Because you read how much they were compatible…
At the mall with his name on the front of your sweater,
And vice versa…
Back when every poem began with, “roses are red, and violets are blue…”
And ended with “sugar is sweet and so are you…”
Back when getting a girl didn't take "game" or lame flow...
Just, "do you want to go with me? circle "yes" or "no"...
Back when “forever” was simply not long enough
And when you said “I love you” she said “I love you more…”
And then you said, “No, I love you more…”
And then she said, “No, I love you more…”
But as you got older you forgot it all…
And after watching “Love & Basketball”
I recall a love so lost we simply choose to ignore it all.
