Not only was she old and lonely
She was also very wise
The words she spoke to me
Were somehow words I never heard
So many years later
Long since my old friend has gone
I again hear her lonely voice
And I finally hear her words
Hold your head up high
You must hold your head up high
And never look back
Now I understand what she was saying to me
For not only was she old and lonely
She was also very wise
If only I had listened so many years ago
Despite the best of advice, we seem to have to live through our disasters, experience them ourselves before we can accept that what we were told so long ago would have helped so much, had we only followed that advice. It is human nature. What a shame. It is a hard hard lesson to be learned. And then we wonder why the young don't listen to our advice. :)
Good work Tricia. I always enjoy reading your poetry.

This is also the first of your poems I have read and I was very impressed. I love meeting new people! What I hae seen here is someone that writes straight from the heart and I love that. Your subject is so real. Her words of wisdom were exactly that. Hold Your Head Up High And Don't Look Back. Great advice for anyone to follow but not always easily taken.
I loved this first work of yours I have just finished.

when we're young, it's easy for us to think we have all the answers, that we have life by the short hairs... and we don't realize the wisdom of those who've gone before... been there myself... and now i have children who look at me as if i'm crazy when i try to tell them... good thoughts, very good wisdom here. eric
Advise is always ignored, especially if it is given from some elderly people... I turn a deaf ear sometimes, only to find that i shouldnt have... Smilesz. Take care, tricia...go along from the trips and falls. :)
Beautifl tribute to a very wise lady. Unfortunately, it is often the plight of the world to ignore the words of those who experienced life already. We often judge by physical appearance, not, by wisdom. Well done. Amy

Tricia, we always find out when we are older, that we become wiser, also. Wishing we had taken advice from people when we were younger. That is just human nature, I think. If only, are the two most used words in the English language. If only I had or had not, listened or not listened; We wonder if only, it would have turned out the same. But, we can Never go back to if only. We must try our best every day and hold our heads up high, no matter what. Good luck. Linda
