I knew a girl
once in school
a bright precocious
child of the Flower Moon
with a metal smile
Months stretched into
forgotten years
until on a
cold March winter
I heard of her death
An obituary entry
a flame snuffed out
by a cruel hand
with a wicked knife
and empty conscious
Spring brought death
flowers never as bright
laid on a grim mound
reminding my beating heart
of the fragility of life
