Patriotism
is the last refuge
to which a scoundrel clings
or so I’ve been told
and I see some relevance
to such a statement
It’s like I know
what America was
and what America
is supposed to be
and then there’s
what America has
actually become
see, the lofty goals
don’t become reality
through pretend
it takes a lot of work
We can’t keep pretending
that it isn’t there
and we haven’t sunk
to some lower level
It’s like when I see
a turd floating in the water
that didn’t go down
after flushing
and I think of Capitol Hill
and the White House
Of course, I flush again
as soon as
the septic tank settles
the second effort
generally pays off
and it’s more pleasant
in the long run
than pretending
that the turd
isn’t actually there
I can think of plenty
of activities
that are more strenuous
on the arm
than flushing a toilet
I think most activities
are more strenuous
on the arm
than flushing the toilet
sometimes flag waving
can wholly be
a masturbatory affair

What a politically astute
What a politically astute metaphor! Perhaps, when the flush becomes successful, the flusher should holler a triumphant, "You're fired," as the departing turd is swept out of the porcelain bowl it has temporarily occupied.
