SHE GREW UP

Her parents use to read her Fairy Tales

she remember their voices…

their joy…

their laughter

which is why, she imagines, she grew up

believing in happily ever after.

She believes in bears that talk…

in trees that dance…

in wizards who can fly...

She believes a kiss can turn a frog into a prince

She believes in castles in the sky…

She believes in dragons who breathe fire…

She believes some mice may be blind

She believes witches can be beautiful

and ogres can be kind

And today, now that she is old

every night when she closes her eyes in bed

she still believe in magic lamps…

in beanstalks

and houses made of gingerbread.

And when she opens her eyes every morning

she smiles wondering how her parents knew…

how happily ever after her life would turn out

how Fairy Tales do come true.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

I was raised on fairy tales…my favorites were the rhymes.

It’s where I learned about happily ever after and once upon a time.

Fairy tales helped develop my hopes and dreams.

I can’t measure their effect on me.

They helped to shape who I was then…

and the who I came to be.

Then I grew up and I was told happily ever after is harder than it looks…

that it doesn’t always happen the way it does in books…

But I believe it can…

for every fairy tale, as anyone whose ever read them knows,

had their share of troubles…had their share of woes…

but troubles were always resolved…and all the woes were mended

and happily ever after…is how those stories ended.

Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Cinderella

all had sorrowful moments…devoid of joy and laughter

yet in the end didn’t our protagonists…

live happily ever after?

It’s simple really…we have to learn to recognize the signs…

because sometimes life…as with fairy tales

Is lived between the lines…

As for me:

My fairy tale has come true…I’m living my once upon a time

I found my happily ever after…and as you may have guessed by now…

I still enjoy the rhymes.

Fairy Tales

They grew up listening to fairy tales
their parents would read in bed...
Tales of kings and queens and castles
were the stories they were read.

And they wanted to be that king..that queen...
To take a husband or a wife...
To rule with compassion from their castle...
To live a happy life.

They grew up, as we all do,
and left those bedtime stories behind.
But the fairy tales they remember...
were always in their minds.

They met...they fell in love...
He said, “You treat me like a king.
and I will treat you like a queen...
if you wear my wedding ring.”

Their castle was a tiny house
filled with joy and love and laughter...
and the ending...as expected...
they lived happily ever after.

They say if you’re lucky life comes full circle
Or perhaps it was something they read...
For now at bedtime they sit with their children...
and read fairy tales in their bed.
