[after chillin's poem, "The Short Walk To The Library"]
At college in the seventies;
from the first of warm weather to its last;
many people walked to the library, shoeless---
barefoot or just socks beneath
bell-bottom jeans, or wide-leg painters' pants.
Nor was this specific to gender:
both male and female preferred the casual comfort,
although I preferred only the female version.
The brothers of Greek-letter fraternities
being "boob-" or "butt-men,"
(their own self-designation)
often waited with great frustration;
whereas I, contrary to them, found
much for my appreciation.
You, Laura,
wearing an untucked button-down oxford shirt,
and perfectly faded denim,
with a militant dislike of shoes,
walked to the library today in sole-grimed
"hunter green" socks,
which, later, you will remove
for your barefoot walk to the cafeteria at lunchtime.
And I can revisit this beautiful late morning of late may,
through poetry (the creation of memory)---
from forty-one years later.
