Orphan

Orphan

There is no easy way to explain this child’s abandonment.

The little girl remembers a year ago: the

the vague picture of her mother too drunk to speak cannot seep away.

She is now nine years old, and her small black doll Betty is her best friend.

Although she is ignorant to most troubles in the world she gets on her knees every night and thanks God for life.

The man in the big white house who she only met twice before moving in with:

he would beat her like an egg.

One night she stayed fretting and frightened, pretending she was dead, under the Barbie sheets of her twin sized bed.

Now in a home with the word Orphan20210 printed on an useful piece of paper:

she is an American problem.

Hope sometimes creeps between the distress she feels, and the cracking white ceiling which requires her full attention.

Through her lightly colored eyes she tries her best not to contribute sorrow to the world.

Maybe soon a family black or white will come to that ugly beige house and pay her mind.
