We lived by the Railroad tracks
the Louisville-Nashville line.
You could sit your clocks by the trains
for they always ran on time.
The midnight special was my favorite
I could hear it from miles away.
The whistle made such a lovely sound
I forgot about the bad times of the day.
Then at 3am right on the dot
the soutbound came along
The engineer would blow that whistle
and make it sound like a Heavenly song.
At six o five the mail train
would slowly chug on by.
It was pulling such a heavy load
you could hear that whistle cry.
I guess the the one we loved the most
ran at ten thirty six.
The enginer would throw out candy
and we loved those peppermint sticks.
Times have changed,I've grown up
and I'm an enginer on a train.
No matter how modern things may get
I still make that whistel sing.
I throw out candy to the kids
and watch their smiling face.
As they eat their candy and slowly wave
as the whistle fades away.
