"And they Died, in Eachother's Arms..."

Folder:
Love Poems

The sun rises and spills its rays on the muggy night,

Vanquishing it with each passing minute.

Two lovers,

Sharing the ups and downs of life---

For years...

Sit at a kitchen table,

Drinking and sipping at coffee and reading the newspaper.

Although their outer appearance shows signs of wear,

The inside is burning alive with every passing second.

Their comforting smiles are exchanged here and there,

And a soft squeeze of a hand reassures the years of love.

Pictures of family line the walls,

Their children, children's daughter's and sons...

How could time fly so fast?

Hours in the day spent sketching a picture with shaking hands --

The grandmother occupies her time,

Sketching a flower garden for the grandchildren.

Building a computer with fading vision--

The grandfather occupies his time,

Assembling a computer for his computer-envious grandson.

After the tedious tasks, the grandfather kisses the grandmother on her hand.

Has it really been that many years since this man asked her to be his wife?

She sits in contemplation and memories--

As he walks off to bed for his afternoon nap.

...And his brown shoulder-lengthed hair blew softly in the wind,

His smile of pearly white teeth, and burning brown eyes.

They met at the ages seventeen and fifteen,

Progressing from there,

Hand in hand,

The promise to be together for eternity.

Their promise never faded---

Through their four children over the years,

Their soccer games,

Their victories in life,

Their defeats.

The grandmother paused and thought---

Years ago when her and her husband were lying in bed,

His youthful hand grabbed her's,

And he stared into her oceanic blue eyes.

"And when the day comes for us to pass on, we will die together."

A faint smile passed over the grandmother's lips,

She promised to die no other way.

Knowing her bones seemed weak in this age,

And her heart a fading beat,

She traveled to the bedroom,

Seeing her husband's chest rise and fall---

A smile crossed her lips again.

What a beautiful man...

She lay down beside him,

One hand over his heart.

Her eyelids fluttering to sleep,

As he gently took her hand in his--

And squeezed an "I love you" three times,

As he did ever since they were kids.

She squeezed three times back,

And stared into his deep brown eyes---

Still filled with commitment after all of these years.

The grandmother drifted to sleep,

Waking in the late-afternoon.

It was quiet beyond belief,

And she saw that her hand rested gently upon his heart---

Ceasing to beat.

Tears welled at her eyes,

As she brought herself to his face...

She kissed his lips gently---

As cold as stone... With a glimmer of warmth still left.

So she calmed herself,

And waited for death,

To come back for her...

She wouldn't take her hand off his heart...

As she drifted to sleep,

Induced by tears---

As she now entered,

Eternal rest.

With her beloved...

...And he stared into her oceanic blue eyes.

"And when the day comes for us to pass on, we will die together."

A faint smile passed over the grandmother's lips,

...She promised to die no other way....

I don't know what to say. As I was reading this I got a little chill. The type you get when you can really feel what you're reading. I finished reading with a little tear. The kind of joy that makes life worthwhile. Super Job!
