Headline in today's N.Y. Times:
'Biden Welcomes Modi With Pomp and Pageantry as He Seeks to Bolster Ties'
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/22/us/politics/biden-modi-state-visit.html
There are more than one correction to be made here. The first error is yet another spelling error made by the Times. I believe Biden welcomed Prime Minister Modi of India with a 'Pump', not 'Pomp' as the headline states. The article doesn't say what type of pump he welcomed him with, but if I were to take an educated guess I would say it's a sump pump. Sump pumps are used to take excess water that drains into your home and pump it outside. With monsoon season coming in a few months, this was a very thoughtful gesture.
The other mistake was made by President Biden. Like the sump pump, giving Prime Minister Modi some ties to help bolster the U.S/India relationship was a nice thought. Biden's heart is definitely in the right place here. But like the previous error, the 'Pomp', it depends on the circumstance.
As President Biden should be aware, Prime Minister Modi rarely wears a tie. I don't believe I've ever seen him wearing one. He usually wears either a Nehru jacket, a Kurta, or a Bandh Gala Suit, none of which you wear with a tie. If you want to check, each of these outfits can be found on Google. I'm sure the Prime Minister will pretend that he's very appreciative, but like the many times I've gotten a Father's Day gift of a tie (another one?), I just stick it in back of the tie rack and forget about it. Hopefully, this gaffe will be offset by the sump pump. We can only hope.
