They say a smile is friendliness and spreads contagiously,
and everyone you smile at returns it to you, free.
They say a smile conveys a warmth that comforts those you see
and opens doors that might not open ordinarily.
They say a smile is all one needs to show sincerity,
but due to different kinds of smiles I find I can't agree.
They say a smile is many things and used in many ways
So let's attempt to ponder just what kind of smile pays.
There's the smile at something funny, one of spontaneity
and always happens to precede a sudden laughing spree.
There's a smile that's plainly mocking when you find you're on the spot, but manners say ‘return it' though you're victim to some plot.
There's that smile of condescension from that "pseudo" with a sneer who seems to think that no-one ever sees through his veneer.
There's that smile of subtle knowing meant to sail right over your head. You're s’posed to grin and bear it 'less you're sensitive instead.
There's the smile, too, of ridicule that makes you want to run. And it's sure to get you down a bit 'less you can take a pun.
There's that smile of indulgence when uselessness you feel
and unless you can prevail it it's your confidence they'll steal.
And then that smile of tolerance when you know you're scoring naught and yet you keep on trying even though you hadn't ought.
There's the smile of understanding from the one who's s'posed to be a friend you thought had liked you though that is doubtfully.
And lastly there's the smile of the one who loves you true...
enough to blot the mem'ries of the bad smiles that you knew.
So now you see they're really wrong 'cause smiles are never meant to make you happy always... it depends on their intent!
I don't usually care for this kind of poetry. I am fashoned from the old 60's beat/confessional/dark, poet's and I am of, more a prose nature myself. Im not saying this to insult or judge you, Im saying this to let you know, because of the way my brain is wired, normally something of this style would not have been given a second glance with me. This was so good, I not only stayed to read it, I actually commented and I sing its praises for both content and form. You are a classic in a modern world and only those like Whitman and Donne and the like can pull this sort of thing off anymore with such class and eloquence so as to entice an old non conformist prose hound like myself into loving it just as much as she does her blah blah blah. Bravo!
