My Wish For You, Dear Wife

By

Richard Haesche

If I had but one small wish in this life,

I would not wish for the things

most people would wish for...

like vigor and health... or unlimited wealth

or the strength and power to make others cower.

Instead, I'd wish you this one wish:

... that you would be young again,

with the clairvoyance to see far ahead into the future.

... that you may see us once again on our wedding day

...just before you said, "I will..."

I would wish that your life would unfold before your eyes and you would see your heart full of gladness, your many tears of sadness, the countless floors you've cleaned, the sleepless nights you've seen, the many, many pains I've brought to you.

The hurt expressions in your eyes, those occasional looks of disappointment at my lies, the pain of childbirth, many sorrows, little mirth, your tender hands made rough by years of work.

And then, when you've seen it all, and weighed the hopelessness against the love, the despair against the brightness, the grief against the smiles, and see that they'll never, never balance...

Then I'd give you that second chance; ...to live it all again... or turn aside

and walk away.

Whatever your choice,

I love you,

no matter what.

Author's Notes/Comments:

All marriages have their ups and downs... to that, most all of us can agree. Mine experienced its share, also. Now, after 47 years, we have both reconciled to a deep, abiding, compromising and forgiving love... we have learned to live together... in peace, in harmony, sometimes in reverie... but always, in love... I can look back safely now and see myself honestly. I learned to forgive myself and thank God for teaching me how.

I think this is the sweetest thing I've ever read outside the holy scripture.
