Pondful of creatures

lazing in midday sun

unmindful of the world above.

Neither seeing or hearing

nor knowing,

nor caring,

but lazing away

in carefree repast.

The world above

full of beat bastards

and half-assed hippies

idle by in lazy contrast

to the multitude of programmed people

cloaked in singular anonymity

and fearful lest they be typecast

as original.

A world of characters

hiding under thin veils

and presenting phony fronts

to the world at large.

What brave souls are these

who would rather die than

be singled out, naked and alone,

and be read,

as a book's page?

Damn the hippies

and their far out world,

but credit them with gall!

At least they've got the guts

to stand apart and be counted.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I was walking through Bushnell Park in Hartford, CT in the late sixties... the era of the hippie... when I wrote this. I had just returned to civilian life after a 20 year career in the USAF and my feelings regarding  flower-children at that time were less than kind.

Good read. I don't know that I agree with the last sentence or not though. Maybe they weren't as brave as they were smart enough to be elusive in their means of escaping the conflict. I personally think the 60s did a great deal to ruin our country for future patriots. It has never been the same.
Thanks,
