@ 27.225 MHz: A Poem For Patriciajj . . . Constellator

I will not say that I have fully figured you out,

because your Poetry is too vast for that.

But I think I have, at least, a handle on what

that Poetry does (and, may I say, does very well).

You are a Constellator, a part of Poetry's most ancient tradition.

"Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale

"her infinite variety."

Millenia ago, human eyes gazed upon the

night sky's multitudinous array of stars---
most of them in fixed positions, but then

those seven wanderers were always moving about.

Such beauty was too much for the human mind---

as it was then or is now---to take in.

So the Constellators, the Poets, charted,

designated, and named certain patterns

according to the tales told in their poems, to

help us find an organizing principle

(chaos being repugnant and not at all very

helpful).  After all, even Adam named the

animals in Eden (before he took that

nasty, serpentine slip-and-fall).

Your Poetry, Patricia, not only names, but

patterns, the various components of human experience,

constellating the catalogue of our circumstances to

bring an order of observation to it, which will then

yield an order of understanding of it, which will

enable the calm acceptance of our existence within it.

The great Constellators of Poetry have already welcomed you among them:

this is proven---demonstrated---by the kind of Poetry you write.

Author's Notes/Comments:

The sixth and seventh lines present a quotation from William Shakespeare's play, Antony And Cleopatra, II:2.  It was the first Shakespearean lines that I ever learned, through the means of an issue of Eerie Magazine, when I was about nine years old, and I used to recite it constantly without understanding it.  The quotation had provided a title to one of the tales, "Nor Custom Stale."

I've received many precious gifts in my life, but this paragon of appreciation must be up there in the top ten. It not only reaffirms my purpose, but does it in majestic style, with sincerity, with skill that rivals the best.

With deep humility and awe, I'm trying to wrap my head around the beauty and significance of this gift that even after reading, still falls like luminous manna all around. And still, so deeply moved, I want to translate my gratitude into words beyond the ordinary, but only two, when all is said and done, are ever up to the task: Thank you!
