Eyes with the shining brilliance of gold
speak of histories past and ancient stories told.
The tears shed from these glorious eyes,
mourn the end of summer and the coming of winter skies.
Slowly the spirit of a woman comes into focus.
It is a goddess, fallen from grace, that stands before us.
She is dressed in a mantle of orange, yellow, green, and red.
A pattern of leaves is embroidered upon it with gold thread.
Her tears trickle down her face and into her soft brown hair.
What can she do to save her only love, her only care?
She picks up a dead leaf and stares at it in her hand.
Her eyes fall upon her sleeve and she comes up with a plan.
"If summer's leaves are green," she thinks aloud.
"Then let them fade in beauty and make a blanket on the ground."
Picking up a paintbrush, she paints the dying leaves in warm color--
red, yellow, brown, orange--the colors of a sunrise in summer.
She thinks each one unique, each one beautiful.
As she finishes she lets out a sigh. "It's wonderful."
No longer cold or dead, the beauty of life shined over the land.
"No longer will the Earth die by winter's hand,
it will only sleep under a blanket of leaves I created."
As she said this, the Gods above were belated.
"No longer is she fallen from grace,
with her creation she has proved her place."
The King of all Gods climbed down from Heaven's Gate.
Bowing to her, he said, "Forgive us for keeping you from your fate.
Come back with me Autumn, you are destined to be among us.
We were wrong to doubt you were a true goddess."
Awed, Autumn placed her hand in his and followed close behind.
"Your creation shall be named after you for it came from your mind.
Henceforth there will no longer be three seasons but four,
with you the Goddess of Autumn, who came up for Earth's demise a cure."
At this announcement she sighed happily and glanced behind her.
She's been given a wonderful gift thanks to "Autumn's" splendor.
She said, "I'll forever love Earth, my beautiful home,
but here in heaven surrounded by others is where I really belong."
