Spina Bifida

He has questions

About his world

Of Piedro boots, irrigation kits

Orange bags and walking sticks

“You are special” our Gods gift

He would like

To play football in the yard one day

And the smell of incontinence to go away

The twilight trips to paediatric ward

To eventually cease

Stars sparkle

In his smile

I find peace

I have learnt more from him

Than I could ever teach

Courage, patience, will power

And the desire

To achieve tasks beyond his reach

At night as his mother

Massages his aching legs, finds painless blisters

On numb feet

It hurts.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This is a very emotional poem, it is about my son, bless him he is a lovely little lad and full of life. This poem has been commended in the recently held competetion called "The Hippocrates prize for poetry and medicine". I am very proud as I have been commended for the second year running. It is tough as there are more than 1000 entries and some real big names enter. I am the only one from Wales to have won. Enjoy the poem.
