Tim’s senior year of High School was winding down to the final days. His only worries were trivial ones that would quickly be solved by the influence of his girlfriend that he planned to attend college with and eventually marry. He intended to major in criminal justice and later become a prosecutor in his life. Tim had come from a wealthy family; he was used to getting whatever he wished for by simply asking. As was tradition in his family, once a member of the household graduated they would receive whatever their pleading heart desired.
A few weeks before the day where his childhood chapter would end, his father asked him what he pined for. Tim told his father that he wished for a new Ford Mustang, knowing he could well afford it. That would be the best gift he could ever receive. His father looked to the ground and smiled, looking up at his young son he smiled and said “Ask and you shall receive.” Later that night he called his girlfriend to proclaim the good news. To celebrate he told her that they would go to a nice restaurant. He picked her up at her home and shared a little gossip with her parents before they departed. They never arrived that night, a suicidal man decided to take Lauren’s life because of the resemblance she had with the lady that destroyed his life before he took his own.
As graduation night came Tim was still in much emotional turmoil. He hoped that his diploma and new car would arrive in his hand that night, he thought that the items might bring him some comfort. Two hours before his graduation his father called him into the study. His father was sitting in a leather chair holding a simple box. Tim hoped that this was the moment he would receive his car. His father looked to him with a proud look in his eye and shed a few tears before handing over the simple box. Still in a broken hearted way he opened the gift apathetically. He looked inside to find a hard covered black Bible. Raising the Bible from the box he bellowed to his father: “With all of your money and me telling you specifically what I wanted you bought me a Bible!” Throwing the bible down, he stormed out of the house to never look back.
Throughout the coming years he struggled through life to become a successful prosecutor. In his early forties he received a telephone call, his father had died and the funeral was in a week. It was the first time he had stepped foot in the house. Trudging through the house he came into the study and found the box as it sat years before. Inside he found the bible… and a set of keys marked: Ford Mustang: Paid In Full.
