and so he kept his feet warm
by standing in steaming new
cowpies.
Neighbors thought it a scandal
that he had no boots or sandals..

That's also pretty much how some indiginous North Americans and colonizing Europeans kept pumpkin and squash seedlings protected from late frosts. They'd plant the seed and surround it with horse or bison manure.
