THE REFLECTION OF A CONTRADICTION

I remember when you were just as

Black as me...

Angela Davis; Maya Angelou...

Black fisted pics in Afros -

before braids were done, and

"brothers" became "niggas" in the slums of the project;

Before our realities were suspect, and

our dreams were neglected...

And I sit and think back to when you were just as

Black as me...

Jazzy percussions, with no reprecussion

to the way you grooved to the beats...

Ellington; Davis; Parker...

and Gellespie had you Dizzy

from the sounds of the street...

Yeah, I remember when you were just as

Black as me...

Dashikis instead of Hillfiger;

bare feet instead of Timberland...

when fountains of water were denied

we drank from regurgitated water

of Rivers of a Nile that never existed...

And you wonder how I could see...

you differently...

when you were just as Black as me...

"Hey, my Nubian Goddess; Queen

of an African King..."

And it seems it went from that to,

"Hey, lil' shawty... Bitch, bring that ass back..."

And back then we used words that glorified men...

and Bob Marley was a musical genius,

and not the shit you smoked...

And Black Pride was the action we took,

and not the bullshit we spoke...

And as I choke from this sudden truth...

I now remember when

I was just as Black as you.

Tha Prodigal One...

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this piece while
sitting in at an open mic poetry session. It was something that just came to mind.
