My Missing Years

I bet you never thought you'd see me

Around these parts again

’Cause five minutes after graduation

I blew out of here like the wind

Was the first one in three generations

To tip their hat to be something more

And whatever I was missing

Was damn sure worth looking for

So I hit the road

Lonely lonesome road

And I got lost in Toledo trying to find my place in the world

Met a girl in Detroit

Turns out she was not the one

Made my way to Vegas,

Wandered up and down the strip

Till it dawned on me what I'd left right here

And what I'd been missing in my missing years

Been around the clock a time or two

Thought about packin’ up and movin’ south

South of the rain and snow and the cold

Maybe even south of the border

Heard my name somewhere between the ocean and the bottle

No further could I push the throttle

Signed my life away to Uncle Sam

Turns out he signed it right on back

And it dawned on me what I’d left right here

And what I’d been missing in my missing years

And so I can home with my a lowered head

And a lowered sense of pride

An empty wallet and a broken name

But there one thing I was certain of

I never came home missing my missing years
