The Contradiction

A woman taught me…

Learn to love yourself,

Before you allow another to take your love.

Learn to heal yourself,

Before another can cause you pain.

Learn to value yourself,

Before another can show you disrespect.

Learn to live for yourself,

Before you can live for anyone else.

Learn to respect your body,

Before you allow another to abuse it.

Learn to speak your mind,

Before you allow another to shut you up.

Learn to listen to the unsaid,

Before you allow another to convince you of anything.

Learn to stand alone,

Before another tries to make you fall.

Learn to hold your head high,

Before another tries to snatch your pride.

That same woman…

Allowed another to take the love away from herself.

Allowed another to cause her emotional and physical pain.

Allowed another to disrespect her mind and body.

Allowed another to control her life.

Allowed another to mark her beauty.

Allowed another to shut her mouth close.

Allowed another to convince her of false happiness.

Allowed another to handicap her and depend on them.

Allowed another to snatch her pride away.

When will that woman realize…

The contradiction to our upbringing she has shown us.

The contradiction to our morals she has instilled in our heads.

The contradictions to our beliefs she has raised us with.

When will that woman realize…

She is a student that needs to be re-taught.

She is a lover that needs to be loved.

She is lost and in need of guidance.

Author's Notes/Comments:

The lesson is not in what you teach, but what you learn.

This poem pulls at the strings of the readers heart. How many times have we all felt the same way about a friend/loved one. As children we grow and are taught by our guardians/parents to be the best in life, little do we know that one day we'll become the teachers... of our own guardians/parents. LIFE! Keep up the good work JACKIE!

Words never spoken more wisely, with more truth, feeling, honesty, love and pain. Remember "learn from other peoples mistakes because you cant possibly make them all on your own". Know that you are strong, loved and OH SO FLIPPIN WONDERFUL!!
