Bridging The Gap

I am at a precipice
between the past
and the future.

The bridges I've crossed
have burned down
behind me.

The path ahead
is marked with doubt
and obstacles.

I steadily make progress
leaving in my wake
the scent of smoke.

I remain with the reminder
that once before
my eyes watered.

Author's Notes/Comments:

"We cross our bridges as we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke and the presumption that once our eyes watered."
