I Watched The Sun Drown Today

i watched the sun drown today

not like a gorgeous sunset

nor like rising tides

in the book of climate apocolypse

not like a storm on the horizon

quickly climbing to take lights place

no, i watched the sun drown today

oh, it jumped to it's death

tired of us

but no one noticed

in the light of their cell phones

no, no one noticed

but me

or at least that's how it feels

to be

i watch the sun drown itself

tired of being used

people using it at a lamp

so they could see each other's skins

and make foolish decisions

about who the other was

and wild generalizations

about from where they came

and then look back down

i watched the sun drown today

not like a gorgeous sunset

nor like rising tides

in the book of climate apocolypse

not like a storm on the horizon

quickly climbing to take lights place

no, i watched the sun drown today

oh, it jumped to it's death

tired of us

but no one noticed

in the light of their cell phones

no, no one noticed

but me

or at least that's how it feels

to be

i watched the sun drown itself

to depressed to go on

keeping the planet warm

so we can all turn into robots

and make programmed decisions

about what to buy next

and as the wild has left us

forgetting our nature

forgetting our nature

is that we are a part of it

not something separate

or to be segragated from it

like we segregate from each other

standing on the outside

of insanity

looking at it from inside

an asylum

they locked me away

for suggesting

kids should go out and play

and it's adults that should be most leery

of strangers

no matter how famous

and well dressed and labeled

experts

well, maybe i'm crazy

but you're insane

for driving the sun and constellations

from your children's future

and showing them artificial stars

to guide their journey

as these rising stars have misguided yours

and for having only used the sunlight

to highlight our differences

then looking down again

so as not to feel sympathy

yea, i watched the sun drown today

i watched the sun drown today

well, maybe i'm crazy

but the world's insane

i watched the sun drown today

not like a gorgeous sunset

nor like rising tides

in the book of climate apocolypse

not like a storm on the horizon

quickly climbing to take lights place

no, i watched the sun drown today

oh, it jumped to it's death

tired of us

but no one noticed

in the light of their cell phones

no, no one noticed

but me

or at least that's how it feels

to be

and i lit a candle

again

how many candles

have i lit

since that ancient day

that she passed away

it feels like lifetime's

ago

but i've kept life going

in me

candle to candle

year to year

a vigil for hope

for hope to come back

to come back to life

and for the life of hope

to turn the browned and dried

landscape of man

green again

as i stand at the sun's grave

and a riding mower passes

there's a person

who's been sitting on it

sitting and riding

since before the fateful day

he's never stopped mowing

always looking down at videos

on his phone

carelessly knocking over candles

as he goes

I revisited this poem again

I revisited this poem again today, and again found it to be profoundly brilliant and poignant and with just a bit of irony thrown in for good seasoning.  A real pleasure to re-read this again.

Great song or epilogue! I

Great song or epilogue! I admire your thought process. I'm a climate yeah whatever kind of person. The science in more than one area points to an in warranted hysteria. Regardless, I think this brings the point home on many levels. Well done! Ss

Don't let any one shake your dream stars from your eyes, lest your soul Come away with them! -SS

Yes, I do understand. There

Yes, I do understand. There are certainly reasons why I refer to it as the Book of Climate Apocalypse. One way or another, we're often looking and predicting the end is coming soon. We've been doing that a long time (perhaps as long as time has existed?), ideological institutions are just finding new ways to do it. All the while, maybe we are missing the point, and missing where our efforts can truly carry a long lasting meaning.

Thank you for your encouraging and kind response. I greatly appreciate it you taking the time, both to read and to write such a response. :)

This is one superb poem!

This is one superb poem!  Took my breath away as I read it.  Elegaic, apocalyptic, romantic---all of these strands woven into one tapestry.  Wow!  You should be very proud of this poem.
