My Grandfather´s Piano

My Grandfather´s Piano

My grandfather kept his piano near the kitchen, know that I think about it I never understood why he put it there. He used to play such beautiful songs before we went to sleep and when we woke up. I remembered this cold winter morning after Christmas, the 29th of December to be specific, the day I always turn one year older. My grandfather used to play ever since I remember “Las Mañanitas” (mexican birthday song) at 8 o´clock. It was the biggest gift that I could ask for, I went down the stairs and there he was, my handsome grandfather sitting in the piano playing and singing. I knew that when I hear that song I most run down the stairs and there he will be. My cousins and I loved to go to my grandparent´s house, we always knew that this instrument will always be waiting for us with something new. Unfortunately, years pass, and my grandfather had Parkinson, he soon stopped playing but never lose his smile, and every 29th of December he did an extra effort and play that great song for me. When I turned 8 years old I started to learn how to play piano. I have a piano in my house but every holiday that I went to my grandparent´s house I anxiously run all the way to the piano and play for my grandfather. I wouldn´t change anything about the moments we spent laughing and playing the piano. The sound of this piano was different, I don’t know exactly what it is, but it fells so well to play it and hear it. In 2012 my grandfather passed away and ever since I had just play that piano one time at it was on my first birthday that I spent without him, and it was extremely hard. I quit playing the piano after that but every time I go to my grandparent´s house and I see that old dusty piano I can only think of all the beautiful memories I had with the instrument, and I suddenly feel better and start to laugh and smile. Last year my little cousin started to play the piano on Christmas and I was really surprised because it sounded like not a day have passed since it was last use. This piano means a lot to me and my family, we all have histories with it and it is a relief that it remains intact after all these years.

I enjoyed reading your story.

I enjoyed reading your story. I could almost hear the music playing in my ears. What a wonderful heirloom to still be around.
