He’d never heard the trumpet sound,
in warbled notes o’er hallowed ground,
nor lain in honored flag draped bier,
midst gun's salute in staid revere.
He’d not felt death from cannon's wrath,
dealt swift from foes in battle's path,
and sabers thrust ne’er left its scar,
nor drew life blood on fields afar.
O’er shell and shrapnel littered trail,
‘neath mortar's burst of piercing hail,
while rifle volleys ricocheted,
that soldier ventured unafraid.
In noble stance he scoffed at death,
ne’er fearing combat's fatal breath.
So march to war, o’ worthy Knight,
in joining victory's righteous fight.
O’ onward warrior, brave and sure,
the quest, God's righteousness endure,
and pray the Lord for strength and nerve,
for honors sake, ne’er bend nor swerve.
Then crawling forth through salvo's rain,
whilst rockets flare exposed the slain,
knelt ‘mongst those dead in disbelief,
cursed God and sobbed in anguished grief.
O’er shell and shrapnel littered trail,
‘neath mortar's burst of piercing hail,
while rifle volleys ricocheted,
that soldier ventured unafraid.
The horrid days bring fearful nights,
'neath siege of cannon's awesome might,
and though he’d never see the shell,
it bled the life from him as well.
He’ll still ne’er hear the trumpet sound,
with lifeless form ‘neath hallowed ground,
and as he’d passed God's final test,
with gun salute, was laid to rest.
Another unsung hero‘s lost,
in war's horrific holocaust,
and whilst his soul received God's grace,
one more arrived to take his place
Again, o’er shrapnel littered trail,
‘neath mortar's burst of piercing hail,
while rifle volleys ricocheted,
a soldier ventures unafraid.
This is a great poem. The message is so true. As a soldier in the United States Army, about to be shipped to Iraq, I enjoy reading these poems. Keep it up :)
This is an absolutely magnificent piece of work! I am so glad I ran across it at Poeticarts or I would have missed it entirely. You are a very gifted writer and have left me with the loneliest sense of loss (just from reading your words as I have never been a soldier myself) that I could FEEL the panic yet patriotic pride of serving. I can't tell you how much respect I have for this particular work. Your page has now been bookmarked to my favorites. Thank you for posting it.
