The Ancients

I've seen rainbows in my dreams

Found magic spells but don't know what it means

I heard the sky open wide

And caught an ancient echo on an astral tide

I took the wisdom in what was said

Disembodied voices singing in my head

They showed me starlight on a mountain high

Embracing sunbeams, and riding the sky.

There on the edge, where time and space collide…

     I felt so free.

Then in the darkness I felt a presence arise.

     They didn't tell me…

I heard a screaming in my ears,

And glimpsed the Evil of a thousand years.

In this place of the Ancients' flight

Lay a demon in waiting.  Lord, imagine my fright!

Circling around me with a lust for my soul.

In a fear stricken panic I lost control.

I cried out for magic, had the Ancients tricked me

Into a web of deceit while they set themselves free?

I grasped for something as I felt myself fall.

A memory or daydream I don't quite recall.

All consciousness was slipping away

The fear in my eyes screamed, "Will I die this day?"

There in the stillness, my heart beat pounding loud…

     Something occurred to me.

What the Ancients were searching for…

     Was hiding in my dreams.

The secret I'd found I clung to so dear

As I felt the breathing of the demon draw near.

I thought I saw the Ancients watching this game

Had their savior come to end the demon's reign?

Then the rainbow broke loose, as the darkness gave way

To a coming dawn as I awoke to the day.

Why did it happen?  I may never know.

Maybe I opened what was never meant to be.

And now this nightmare I try to forget, but can't help wonder…

     Were the Ancients set free?

Author's Notes/Comments:

I really don't know where this one came from. I think it may have been inspired by Ozzy Ozbourne's "Over the Mountain". Something about riding shooting stars and the sky...the rest just sort of followed.

One of your most powerful pieces, poetry or lyrics aside. The ancients seem a disembodied, malignant force that are always just on the verge of tangibility yet forever elusive... and bloody creepy.
