Where do we go in this world full of indignation
How do we survive in war?
Is pride so important to people
That we would sacrifice all we have worked for
Just to say we fought to keep a part of it
How can we justify killing other men?
How can we as humans sit idly by
while children cry for just one meal
We sip our coffees, eat our fancy salads
We have the nerve to complain
My soup is cold, my toast is burnt
How dare we take for granted what others
would sell their souls to have for only one day
In our world
poverty means we have thrift store shoes hamburger instead of steaks
We can pay a TV Star 1,000,000 dollars
to film one episode of a
pointless sit-com
Yet there are children malnourished
and praying for one drop of clean
water to drink
The same stars
who have the audacity
to plead to us with artificial faces
To please "save the children"
It makes me sick to think
that we gallivant around
in our cars with our cell phones
While there are other humans literally "starving to death"
It seems I myself am guilty
of using this sentence
When having to wait
an extra half an hour for dinner
"Starving to death"
it almost sounds
like a taunting joke
coming from well fed lips
War, famine, illness, death
These are realities
sometimes softened
by our candy-coated world
We cannot ignore it anymore
The truth is becoming
all too painfully clear
within the past couple of years
We have to make a change
before the world
is lost within itself
And we no longer have a choice
This ought to be posted and framed and put into the office of every world leader around as a start.
Eh, the people who have the power to change things are the first who forget what needs to be done and get lost in the glinting glory of being rich. Great poem.
