02-03 Crossroad Kitchen

Where am I now?

The road seems so untraveled.

Even if I knew

where I were headed,

who would recognize

the name of the place of being,

the state I aim to reach.

Unpack the rifle.

Calibrate the scope.

Load the chamber.

Pull the trigger,

and I fly.

Let loose by contained explosion,

I can finally soar.

Maybe this time

I can find the overlapping seam

where reality starts.

Oh,

you didn’t know

you haven’t seen reality yet,

this is only just a taste.

You’ve been licking cake batter,

but you haven’t seen the frosted finish

and blown out the candles,

ready to dive in

to the experience.

I can’t bake your cake for you,

that wouldn’t be right.

But it’s ok,

you’ve been learning how

to expand the in between space

if only you’ve been paying attention.

Now, if you can tell me

which way is next,

I can carry on.

Your guess is better than mine,

mine is too influenced

by the ways I’ve already been,

the roads I’ve trampled down

and the signs I’ve seen.

So just pick a way

for me to go

and I’ll leave you to your baking.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I really really really like the second stanza. . . I say "you" but I have no idea who the "you" in this poem would actually be directed toward.

extended metaphor = goodness

especially because it involves cake.

I like this:

'Oh,
you didn’t know
you haven’t seen reality yet,'

For whatever reason the "oh, [pause] you didn't know" is lovely to me.
