God and Me

I lay here next to God;

I feel his warmth through the sheets.

I hear his breathing and his heart

skip a beat.

I roll over and stare at him asleep.

He looks so peaceful next to me.

I don't want to disturb him so I slide

out of bed.

He stretches rolls over and lays down

his head.

I go to the kitchen and fix me a cup.

I know I won’t sleep, at least not much.

I light up a cigarette and wonder why;

God is asleep when I can’t shut my eyes.

I think he should be awake and I should be asleep.

After all he is God and I’m just counting sheep.

The world must wear him out, because he’s dead asleep without a doubt.

I’m curious if he dreams of a brighter day.

When Satan is at rest and peace at play.

Does he talk in his rest or maybe mumble

at best?

I’m not tired I scream!

Why must you be?

We could talk. I could listen to you, you could listen to me.

Hey, I shout, get up God!

You have prayers to answer and miracles to perform.

He slowly wakes up and nods.

Don’t go back to sleep you must get up!

Here have a drink from my cup.

Now that you have woken up, I have one question for you.

How come you slept like a baby with all the troubles in the world and I could not?

God answered in a rough dry voice, “Because we differ, You and me, I have faith in the word, the hope, the good. And you lose sleep because you cannot see.”

See what?

“You don’t see that when I am at rest you watch over me.”

But God, how can I watch over you?

“By knowing in your heart I am the chosen one.”

You are, you and your son. But I’m still confused. How do I watch over you?

“Because when your eyes shut you don't see perfection, you see pain. You don’t see angels you see evil. You see mankind you don’t see me. My child, you cannot sleep because you know that I was.  And when you do finally rest your eyes you will have complete faith in me. Your creator, your Father, your companion, your savior.”

WOW, that is the best thing that's ever crossed my mind. It's amazing. It's beautiful. It shows everything that people do. That they trust God, but only to an extent, and that eventually you realize, that you have to trust him completely, that you have to have faith completly. Like you wrote, you can't sleep until you have faith in him. I've struggled so much latly with my relationship with God and I just can't express to you the way your poem made me feel. I different prespective, a new light. Thank you so much. If you don't mind, I might print this out, so I can read it again, when I'm feeling like this, just to get me through some tough moments.
