Epigram On A Nautical Crisis

. . . some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck . . .

---1 Timothy 1:19

I did not hurl the RMS Titanic

against that iceberg; nor did send her down
into the depths.  I did not like the panic;
I did not much enjoy pacing the deck,
knowing that I was now standing aboard
a ship entirely doomed to sink, a wreck.
I could have stuck my nose up and ignored
finding an offered lifeboat, or refuse
to sit in one with people not like me.
But, although being short on common sense,
and even short on deep experience,
I knew this:  in the midst of all that strife,
only one option offered me more life
(far better, at that hour, to live than drown).
Only one choice remained:  I knew to choose
and sought safety, at once, and sensibly.
