Herod's great fear of losing his throne
causes his breath to become like a wild beast's pants
(this fear is the worst of his many discontents):
so he commands the murder of Bethlehem's innocents---
and he believes, with a gambler's confidence
(and his admittedly shrewd political experience)
that none will hear, or care, about it in Rome.
So, with a petty king's impunity, he destroys
babes who would have become beautiful
long-haired, barefoot, adolescent boys:
thus Herod comforts the emptiness of his soul.

Having been schooled in all
Having been schooled in all boy's institutions this biblical tale as well as the one in Egypt had imprinted me, the image of school halls lacking entire cohorts because of the 'genocide' of their entire generation. It has been a pillar of my spiritual journey and faith walk.
here is poetry that doesn't always conform
