about pot

is just an expression

guaranteed by

the First Amendment

to the Constitution

& so it can actually

provide opportunities

to meet people

and have amusing adventures

one time

I was reading

at a bar

and doing my pot-etry

I finish up my set

and walked back

to my table

and my pint of Guinness

which was warming

I am approached

by a fellow poet

who asks me about

getting high

I shrug like,

“sorry don’t have any.”

but he does

and is offering to share

I relocate

to his table

and he fills a tobacco pipe

with sacred ganja

and lights up

we pass it back

and forth

and it looks like

smoking tobacco

even though it’s pot

a couple other people catch on

to our scheme and

cut in on the action

I light up a cigar

to cover the smell

I smile at the bartender

and the hostess

It’s not every night

you get to get high

with a public defender

at a poetry reading

these are the little moments

that you remember

when you’re old and gray

and can no longer do

all the things you used to do
