If I could put into words, the joy
I felt when you came into my life,
And you held me in your tender arms,
For the very first time.
If I could put into words, the life
I felt when you first caressed my skin,
As you gave me pleasure without words,
For the very first time.
If I could put into words, the love
I felt when we shared the happiness
Of our most beautiful babies,
For the very first time.
If I could put into words, the hope
I felt when I was sure it was you
Who would be there when I grew older,
For the very first time.
If I could put into words, the pain
I felt when the truth of betrayal
Came from you in a flood of darkness,
For the very first time.
If I could put into words, the loss
I felt when I knew I would live
Without you until my dying day,
For the very first time.
Amy, i am very much awed by this poem.
How is it that i didnt notice it the last time i was here?
I am sure you must have heard of the song "If" by Bread. David Gates was here in Singapore for a concert early this year. I had a chance to watch it, and it was indeed a very emotional and memorable performance. His voice embodied the essence of lost innocence and lingering hope, a music that is so timeless and ethereal in our world.
Your poem is just as lyrical and soothing. I can almost hear a music that is derived from the poem. But then again, i wouldnt want to set this to music, because the words themselves are good enough.
A great poem... a gem.

The ending was a surprise, I wasn't expecting that. Thanks for a good read!
