Let Him In

His heart is racing

Pounding at the door of my chest

“Let me in!” He cries

I bolt the latch.

His love falls on deaf ears, it seems

For it gets no reaction.

I know he truly cares -

But to reply to those three words would entail

That I care too.

And then I’m attached.

Those three simple words are chains

Tying me down.

Suffocating me.

Shattering my thorny skin

Those three words...

Those three words!

I’ve told him I can’t say them back

Yet still he tries.

Every night, when our goodbyes are said

They are spoken.

I smile, nod, and say:

“Sleep well.”

Perhaps, one night,

I can instead whisper

“I love you too.”

And not have the dread that I do.
