Ken stood outside the stone edifice and looked modestly amused at the situation. Two boys were scrambling down the nature trail, running towards him. Each tried to pass the other by either grabbing the hook of the arm or tripping the other. By the time they reached their father, they were breathless, and laughing so hard they collapsed. They were waiting to go in to dinner, so he should have reprimanded them, but he couldn’t, and began laughing with them.
Ken was an attractive man that didn’t look his age. He loved travelling and visiting historical places like the one they were at right now. An old Mayan temple in the jungles of Mexico had been renovated to hold a resort and a five star restaurant. He had made reservation and he really didn’t want to get the evil eye from the snooty Maitre d’. But he couldn’t help laughing as he helped the boys up. He and his two boys were quite happy with each other’s company until that day, when he met a woman.
She was walking slightly backwards down the path digging in her purse, mumbling to herself, looking back up the path and then into her purse again. So intent on her search, she didn’t see the man and the pile of boys dusting themselves off that she ran slab into them, bringing everyone to the ground again.
“Oh, my Gawd, Oh my God, “ she said, “ I am so sorry.” As she untangled her purse from under one of the son’s head attempting to get up. She fell back down scattering the contents of her pocketbook. All hell broke loose.
Ken, who had gotten to his feet by now, stood out of the way assessing how to right the situation. His polite children started gathering the contents of the purse for the lady who was by now on her knees. Was she laughing or crying at this point? He couldn’t tell.
He reach his hand down to help her up. That’s when it happened. She placed her hand in his, gently pulling herself up. When she had righted herself, she looked up at him and smiled. Not a big smile, but one of gratefulness at his kindness and embarrassment as her clumsiness.
It was almost like he was tunneling into her eyes. Dark and moist, they smiled as well. But then the waterworks began and she head bumped into his chest and brawled like a baby.
“So much for us having a moment,” he thought, and wrapped his arms around her.
