Casket for a Queen

...In loving memory of my grandmother Elizabeth...

~1/3/1916 - 3/22/2006~

When I woke up this morning at 11:00 AM, you forever closed your weary eyes,

While my heart shattered and fell to the cold, gray ground, your emancipated soul was soaring towards sunny, blue skies.

As I was in the elevator ascending four stories in the hospital yesterday, I wretchedly realized that this was going to be the last moment we would ever share,

I silently knelt down by your deathbed and held your hand as I sent out a peaceful prayer.

When you opened your eyes and saw me standing by your side, you displayed the most beautiful smile on your face,

I kissed you and held you close, wishing that this moment would never end, as we shared this affectionate embrace.

Barely able to talk or breathe, but you managed to spill out one last "I love you" from your mouth as I wept a tear and waved "goodbye",

I know that the bright star blinking and shining so vividly is you waving back as I stare at the night sky.

...This eulogy for an angel was written for you and will be read at your funeral word for word,

You are the highest eagle on our family's totem pole, and your soul can finally spread its wings and fly freely like a bird...

It's almost too surreal that the exact moment your eyes were permanently shut, mine were just opening to start my day,

The sky was painted its most brilliant shade of blue, but when I heard the tragic, yet expecting news, my toxic tears tinted my tainted heart the deepest shade of gray.

It seems as if you were waiting for my vital final visit until you decided that it was time to placidly let go of life,

After almost half a century of separation, grandpa can now be happily reunited with his loving wife.

You spent ninety years on this planet and have seen your five children all grow up and start families of their own,

You are by far the strongest and most noble branch on our family tree, and the gracious queen of our historic home; I hope that one day I can be an heir to the majestic throne.

I could see the pain and suffering in your eyes, but I assured you that everything was going to be okay,

For a woman who has been here for almost an eternity, in your expiring hours I felt honored to have made your day.

...This elegy for a hero is dedicated to you, and will be tossed into your grave as you are lowered six feet underground,

You are the most righteous woman to hold my last name, and today, like a queen, you will appropriately be honored and crowned...

...Send me a sign from Heaven, some type of indication that you had a safe trip and made it there alright,

I stare at the celestial sky and smile as the scintillating stars wink back at me tonight...

Author's Notes/Comments:

today, at 11:00 AM, on March 22nd, 2006, my grandmother Elizabeth passed away in Waterbury, Connecticut. She was 90 years old, and has always been a hero and inspiration to me in my life. I was fortunate enough to visit her in the hospital the day before she died, and at least got to see her for one last time and tell her that I love her and kiss her goodbye. I miss her dearly, but she was in a great deal of pain and suffering, and I guess it was her time to go. She is in a better place now and can finally rest in peace. This poem is dedicated to her and the last moments me and her shared together.
