Earthworms in Heat

The heat of the day made everything on the sidewalk sizzle

The earthworms wrangled for they were being cooked alive

Their bodies shrank into naked grapevines

And a surly horsefly could barely land

Before he started to simmer

But luckily he had wings

So he moved to the coolness of a nearby maple leaf
