At The King's Distress

[1 Kings 4:32]

Outside Jersusalem, beyond the wall

a short way, is a little, stony mound

(only a few feet higher than the ground);

and, from my palace, it looks like a skull.

At certain angles, it appears to grin

as if to find amusement at my sin.

I am, of all of Israel, most wise

beyond all men, and my thoughts are profound

(three thousand of my proverbs now abound).

And yet, the sockets of that skull, where eyes

have never been, stared in chill parody

of my proud soul's excessive vanity,

and shadowed darkness, worse than deepest night.

But where or when is found a saving light?

Starward
