At The End Of That Afternoon

Ferociously, they have nailed down each hand

by which, not long ago, thousands were fed.

With frenzied fury, they shrieked their demand

to have that Galilaean crucified.

"His blood be upon us," the priests had said

(their jealousy admitted, not denied).

Falsely accused and just as falsely tried

before the procurator; scourged and bled,

and with a crown of thorns upon his head,

he uttered, "It is finished," as he died

upon that cross.  He will not be long dead,

I think (on that, too, Sadducees have lied

although they really ought to understand

all that they have been taught, and heard, and read).
