Sonnet On The 'Memento Mori'

An orange rat atop a grinning skull

reminds us of the long and ghasly fall

that we have recently had to endure;

and no escaping it---that is for sure.

The skull is provably bereft of brains.
And all it stares at, it corrupts or stains.

This is no prop, no scripted fantasy

depicted in a troubling movie scene;

nor does it decorate for Halloween.

No, this is our deserved reality.

Nor can it be eroded by our tears

no matter how we cry out these, for years.

The fault is ours, the guilt judged and convicted;

the evidence?---what common sense predicted.

I think thats why we hate

I think thats why we hate ourselves sometimes. So many want redemption.
