One key difference between 17th century and 18th/19th century American slavery was that 17th century was a TEMPORARY INSTITUTION; meanwhile 18th/19th century slavery was a PERMANENT INSTITUTION or what is called a "SLAVE-OCRACY." In 1640, slaves were considered part property/part human. Also it include indentured servitude [please look at the "Indentured Servitude" historical piece in the "History" folder for an understanding]. In 1670, Black men in Rhode Island could vote. Slave men could also BUY their freedom as well. However as the years progressed, things became worse... In 1662 and onward for example, there was a law that female black slaves and their infants regardless of father (White OR Black fathers) was still sold into slavery. This shows how RAPE IS INSTITUTIONALIZED IN SOCIETY. This shows where RAPE and it's justifications first began during the development of the United States. It meant that it was okay to rape black women because the law couldn't touch you (in terms of White slave owners). In 1705, slaves were finally considered FULL PROPERTY. In the South during the 18th/19th century, slave owners imposed harsh conditions on their slaves. Slaves would be beaten for not laboring or even from escape from the plantation. Slaves COULDN'T BUY their freedom during the 18th/19th century. The South came up with the term "Jezebel" to describe a young black "lustful" women who craved sex. Once again, this gave reason that it's OKAY to rape black women. Moreover, the South and their "Slave-ocracy" JUSTIFIED their acts from Northerners and abolitionists through the "Sourthern Belle" and "The Mammy." The "Southern Belle" for those who don't know were pure, chaste, White women who were "teaching" slaves morality, etc. In other words, the Southern Belles were "helping" them. They're "leading the way" for their slaves. "The Mammy" described black servent women who "loved" their White owners and their families. She's "faithful" to her owners. But in reality because of the oppressive conditions slaves had to face, it was the opposite... The 18th/19th century slavery and it's permanent "slave-ocracy" justified slavery and exonerates the South from the cruel impositions on their slaves.
This is historical importance...
