Indentured Servitude

Indentured servitude was a method for poor White European men and women to enter the New World (the East coast of America during the 1600's).  They'd serve about four or five years to repay their costs for travelling to the New World.  The significance of indentured servants is that women in particular were exploited during their repayment years.  One out of five women became pregnant during their service years.  Women and also men toiled night and day working.  One example is Elizabeth Sprigs in which she wrote about the horrible conditions of indentured servitude.  She had no proper clothes to wear.  Her master usually summoned her to the horse's drudgery.  If she didn't work properly to appease the horses (shocking huh?) her master would beat her.  In some ways, indentured servitude resembled SLAVERY.
