The Wrong Side Of Town

Folder:
2001

You sit.

Looking out your apartment window.

On the wrong side of town.

Drinking your coffee.

Theres children playing.

Hopscotch on the street.

Dogs are barking.

Couples screaming.

What this life you live?

The pavements cracked.

Your mind is too.

Theres too many cars.

Peeling out.

Leaving skid marks.

The roofs are sagging.

The garbage smells.

Looks like the slums.

Your hair is dirty.

Your clothes are too.

Yesterday you got fired.

That shitty job as a waitress.

But it got you through.

Now youre crying.

The baby is hungry.

And his daddys gone.

He found someone thinner.

She had slutty skirts.

Crusty makeup.

Your coffee is cold.

Doesnt really matter.

A fly has drowned.

And you sit.

Looking out the window.

Wondering if itll get better.

Not for you.

Not for baby.

But maybe for the little kids.

Playing hopscotch.

On the wrong side of town.

I really loved this poem. It had so much feeling and told such a common story. Beautiful. Poignant.

My God! What a piece of work! This tells a whole book in only a few words, so well-put, so eloquent and a total picture of pain and hopelessness. Good Job!!
