For One Day

Doctor you drugged me

So just for one day

This carcass of mine

Doesn’t want to play

I told it to stand:

Muscles in my belly

Push to be upright

Not turn to jelly

Question to get up

Yet here I lay

I’m wondering now

What can I say

To those less fortunate

Who have to stay

In this jellied form

For more than a day

My mind’s the same

Though my body isn’t

Same drive, same will

But something’s different

Above all else

Be grateful for health

It’s far more precious

Than greedy wealth

Tomorrow I know

I’ll be restored

But I know now better

The things abhorred

There’s more to love

In our universe

And I’ve learned a lesson

I’ll share in verse

The spirit exhalts

In every form

Do not despise

Beyond the norm

For a simple pain

I endure this day

But what for those

Who are born this way?

I like this. How did you get the italic printing in the middle of your poem?

Hi Steve! Yes, sometimes one is paralized unexpectantly ... if not by body, then by soul. This poem makes me realize that every day is a gift and every little movement (even the glitter in the eye!) is grace. Thanks. Myra
